NEW SOD CARE

Santa Maria retirement home sanctuary

Caring for new sod is simple, but can be time consuming without a proper irrigation system. Here is the recommended watering routine for newly installed sod, and best practice:

WEEK 1:

Water heavily every day in the morning, and again in the afternoon on the hot days. Roots should be beginning to sprout. Note: there is no need to fertilize throughout this process.

WEEK 2:

One heavy watering every second day. Roots should be staring to make their way into the soil.

WEEK 3:

At this point, the sod should be watered heavily about every 4 days. It should be starting to root down into the soil. Avoid heavy foot traffic until after week 3.

WEEK 4:

Water once per week, and then as needed going forward. Mowing is permitted.

FAQ:

When should I water the grass?

Morning is the best time to water your lawn in order to prevent fungal growth.

How much should I water new sod?

The worst mistake made is under watering new sod – you should water liberally, but avoid over watering as well. Your foot is a good gauge of determining this: soft but not squishy when you step on the grass is ideal.

How soon after installation can I cut new sod?

After the third week it is safe to mow.

Do I need to fertilize new sod?

Do not fertilize until at least two months after the sod has been installed.

Keep in mind...

Rain, heat, sun exposure, and soil conditions can all have an affect on the time and frequency that you water. Remembering those tips and following these directions will help.

Good luck!
